Chrysler plugs in to electrics

Chrysler will unveil three electrically driven concept vehicles at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.

All three of these vehicles would run on batteries that could be charged from an electrical outlet, according to Chrysler. Two would also have on-board power sources to generate more electricity, allowing for greater flexibility and longer range.

The Ecovoyager is a four-door four-passenger vehicle powered by electricity stored in a compact lithium-ion battery pack. A small hydrogen fuel cell could serve to provide additional power as the batteries lose their charge. Total range would be about 300 miles.

Since the vehicle doesn't have a large engine, the entire drivetrain can be packaged below the floor allowing for a completely open space, from the front to the back, for passengers and cargo.

"We could really make the most of cab-forward once again," said Trevor Creed, Chrysler's lead designer, in a video accompanying the sketches. "Cab-forward" was Chrysler's term for its design philosophy during the 1990s, emphasizing a long passenger cabin and a short hood.
